On Tuesday, the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey of more than 1,000 U. men in a 12-month period.
“It’s great news for men experiencing erectile dysfunction,” said David R. Smith, M. D., assistant chief of infectious disease prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. “The results of this study show that these men are not experiencing the symptoms they’re supposed to. They’re being treated with antibiotics that are not effective in treating their underlying disease.”
Risk factors for erectile dysfunction, which include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, smoking and hormonal problems, include a history of a heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and other risk factors for erectile dysfunction, Smith said. “It’s important to keep an open mind and be open with your partner, and also with your doctor about any medications that you’re taking,” he said. “It’s not clear whether these drugs are helpful. It’s important to check with your doctor as to whether you need these drugs or not.”
The results came out on Tuesday. “We are now seeing men who have experienced erectile dysfunction who are taking medications, including Viagra, and they are not responding to the same medication,” said Dr. R. J. Hagerty, M. D., senior infectious disease physician at the National Institutes of Health. “They have been treated with drugs that are not effective in treating their underlying disease.”
The survey of 1,350 U. men from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationally representative database of health data from 2015 to 2018, included a total of 4,852 participants. Of those who reported having been prescribed these drugs, more than 70% had used them. Among those who did not report having taken the drugs, the most common treatment-related comorbidities were diabetes and heart failure.
Risk factors were measured using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), a measure of erectile function. The IEF is a questionnaire that asks about sexual functioning and ability to achieve or maintain an erection.
For those taking the drugs, the IIEF showed a mean reduction in IIEF score of 0.8 in comparison to the baseline. For those taking the drugs, the IIEF was 0.8.
Among those who had a positive response to the drugs, the IIEF score ranged from 0.4 to 1.3.
In addition to the IIEF, researchers at the National Institutes of Health are now collecting more data related to erectile dysfunction. The National Institutes of Health is conducting a study of the use of antibiotics, including penicillin, among men who have experienced an adverse reaction to the drug.
“We are seeing men who have experienced erectile dysfunction in this study. They’re not responding to the same medication,” said Dr. D., the principal investigator on the study. “The results suggest that there is a need for an alternative treatment to antibiotics that is safe and effective in treating the underlying disease.”
The study was conducted at the National Institutes of Health. The researchers recruited men who had been prescribed antibiotics that are not effective in treating their underlying disease and who had been taking the drugs for at least four weeks before they reported any symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
The researchers used a combination of questionnaires to assess sexual functioning and ability to achieve or maintain an erection.
Of the men who completed the questionnaires, 92% reported having had an adverse reaction to the antibiotics. The majority of the men had had diabetes, hypertension and heart failure.
In addition, the researchers found that the most common treatment-related comorbidities were diabetes and heart failure, which are known to cause ED.
Among the men who had had any negative test, about half had taken the antibiotics, and the majority of the men were taking the drugs for at least six months.
In addition to the IEF, the researchers collected information about other important variables, including the presence or absence of other risk factors for erectile dysfunction.
